Section I Jewelry and Face Shape Matching

A person’s image is an important factor in leaving a first impression when meeting someone for the first time, also known as the “primacy effect.” Facial “makeup” is the most vivid and concise way to showcase one’s beautiful image and present oneself to others. Appropriately pairing some jewelry while dressing up to highlight one’s beauty and personality can also serve as a beautiful social calling card. However, since there are significant differences in people’s face shapes, it becomes crucial to correctly match jewelry according to different face shapes, skillfully emphasizing strengths and avoiding weaknesses to achieve a satisfactory matching effect.

Classification and Characteristics of Face Shapes: Face shape refers to the curved structural outline formed by the facial bones (such as the upper jawbone, cheekbone, mandible, frontal bone, etc.), which can be categorized into various shapes, including oval, heart-shaped, round, long, square, and diamond-shaped faces based on the differences in outline.

1. Oval Face and Matching

The oval face is also known as the almond-shaped face, characterized by a wider forehead, a narrow chin, and a pointed jawline, with a length-to-width ratio of about 3:2. This face shape most closely aligns with the golden ratio, referred to as the perfect face shape, as shown in Figure 9-1.

Facial characteristics: It gives a soft, delicate, upright, and elegant appearance.

Figure 9-1 Oval Face
Figure 9-1 Oval Face

(1) Matching Earrings with Oval Faces

The oval face shape is considered a perfect face shape, so the wearing of earrings can adapt to various styles. If the wearer has no specific style requirements for oval faces, so there are no obvious taboos during wear.

Generally speaking, oval faces have soft lines and belong to a face shape with strong curves. When matching, wearing round, oval, petal-shaped, or small drop earrings with strong curves is advisable. This can further enhance the curves of the face and elevate a woman’s gentle and sweet temperament, making it suitable for occasions such as dates and daily work. To express individuality and characteristics, earrings with lines and angles can be chosen.

In terms of materials, wearing simple-shaped metal, gemstone, or pearl earrings can enhance a woman’s noble and elegant temperament. This is more suitable for serious work occasions (such as meetings, receptions, etc.), charity galas, etc. Wooden or stone earrings with natural attributes can give a sense of purity and tranquility.

Colorful and stylish earrings are often used on relaxed and joyful occasions and can be suitable for parties, dances, etc., depending on one’s dressing style.

(2) Matching Necklaces with Oval Faces

The neck is one of the most noticeable parts of the body, apart from the face. It is important to wear necklaces correctly to highlight strengths and downplay weaknesses, enhancing the facial image. Based on shape, necklaces can be categorized by length, thickness, and the area they cover on the neck. In daily life, necklaces can be divided into straight, U-shaped, V-shaped, and Y-shaped.

The necklace matching methods for oval faces are similar to earrings and suitable for various styles. If the neck is relatively short and thick, a long and slender V-shaped necklace can be worn to create a stretching effect. A wider, shorter, straight necklace can be worn for long, slender necks.

2. Heart-Shaped Face and Matching

The heart-shaped face, also known as an inverted triangle, is wider at the top and narrower at the bottom, with the forehead (upper part and the sides around the temples) being the widest. The facial contour line transitions evenly and softly from the forehead to the chin, with a widow’s peak at the hairline and a slightly pointed chin. At the same time, this type of face is slightly shorter than an oval face, as shown in Figure 9-2.

Facial characteristics: It makes a person appear charming, delicate, and pitiful but lacks a sense of stability and is not dignified enough.

Figure 9-2 Heart-Shaped Face
Figure 9-2 Heart-Shaped Face

(1) Matching Earrings with Heart-Shaped Faces

Heart-shaped faces lack a distinct jawline and have a pointed chin, which visually elongates the face shape. They are suitable for various colors and earrings made of various materials. However, due to the visual effect of the inverted triangle on heart-shaped faces, there is a slight deficiency in the width of the cheekbones and jawline. Therefore, attention should be paid to the shape of the earrings during the matching process.

Earrings that are smaller at the top and larger at the bottom, such as teardrop, pear, and fan shapes, can create a visual effect of increasing the width of the jawline. Round, oval, and plum blossom-shaped earrings, which have a strong sense of curve, can also enhance the width of the face shape. This pairing can create a “visual illusion,” making the lower part of the face appear fuller, adding to the softness and elegance temperature of the heart-shaped face.

Earrings with clear angles and strong linearity, such as equilateral triangles, five-pointed stars, and squares, make a heart-shaped face look unique, charming, and full of fashion sense.

Matching taboos: Heart-shaped faces are unsuitable for earrings in the shape of inverted triangles, rectangles, streamlined shapes, or linear designs. These shapes will further elongate the visual effect of a heart-shaped face, making the chin appear narrower.

(2) Matching Necklaces with Heart-Shaped Faces

The range of accessories for heart-shaped faces is also very broad; necklaces of varying lengths and thicknesses can be worn. However, due to the pointed chin characteristic of heart-shaped faces, this face shape is unsuitable for wearing V-shaped necklaces, and necklaces with sharp lower edges (such as inverted triangles) are also inappropriate.

3. Round Face and Matching

A round face is also known as a babyface or doll face, characterized by a rounded and soft outline. The width of the forehead, cheekbones, and jawline is generally consistent, with a soft and full forehead and cheekbones and a rounded and gentle jawline, as shown in Figure 9-3.

Facial characteristics: It makes a person appear cute, lively, and healthy, giving off an innocent and approachable vibe. However, this face shape can appear overly youthful, lacking a sense of maturity, which may lead to a perception of untrustworthiness.

Figure 9-3 Round Face
Figure 9-3 Round Face

(1) Matching Earrings with Round Face

Round faces appear wider horizontally, creating an effect of insufficient length. Therefore, it is necessary to choose earrings to compensate for this issue.
Drooping, elongated earrings are the top choice for round faces, and linear, rectangular, and streamlined earrings can elongate the face shape and reduce the width of the face. These earrings with strong linear characteristics can make a round face appear more rational and mature; tassel types, S-shaped, spiral, and vertically geometric patterns with strong curves can add a touch of fashion and personality while elongating the face shape.

Matching taboos: Round faces should avoid earrings that are round, oval, or square, as they make the face appear wider and rounder (such as large hoops, pentagon studs, etc.).

(2) Matching Necklaces with Round Faces

Round faces are suitable for wearing elongated chain styles that create a lengthening effect, such as V-shaped or Y-shaped necklaces. It is advisable to choose pendants with vertical geometric patterns. This face shape is not suitable for wearing straight or shorter U-shaped necklaces, as these types of necklaces will emphasize the width of a round face; because the round face is too rounded, round pendants and bead necklaces are also not suitable for wearing.

4. Long Face and Matching Styles

The most significant feature of a long face is that the ratio of facial width to length is less than 2:3, resulting in a visually slender and elongated facial contour. The widths of the forehead, cheekbones, and jawline are the same, with insufficient muscle fullness and relatively flat cheekbones, as shown in Figure 9-4.

Facial characteristics: This shape makes a person appear rational, calm, mature, and generous but lacks femininity, is not gentle enough, and is relatively rigid.

Figure 9-4 Long Face
Figure 9-4 Long Face

(1) Matching Earrings with Long Faces

Due to the insufficient width of the face and the excessive vertical length, the overall visual effect of the face is relatively narrow. Therefore, when choosing earrings, one should select those that can enhance the horizontal expansion effect of the face.

Round, heart-shaped, wide-angle fan-shaped, and other curves with strong sense can expand the face’s width and enhance the curve of the facial contour, making the cheekbone area appear fuller and resulting in a softer overall visual effect of the face.

Square, diamond-shaped, and other geometric earrings with a strong sense of expansion can increase the fashion sense of a long face.

Matching taboos: Earrings with strong vertical lines, such as straight, rectangular, and oval shapes, are not suitable for long faces (e.g., tassels, chain-style earrings, etc.). Additionally, when hair is tied back or styled short if the ears are exposed, it is also unsuitable to wear small ear studs.

(2) Matching Necklaces with Long Faces

Long faces are suitable for wearing chunky, short, straight necklaces or chokers, preferably without pendants or with pendants that have a horizontally expanding effect, as this can help shorten the appearance of the face. It is not advisable to wear long necklaces that elongate the face, and pendants with a vertical effect, such as cylindrical or S-shaped designs, are unsuitable, as they will highlight the angular features of a long face. V-shaped and Y-shaped necklaces are also not recommended.

5. Square Faces and Matching

The width of a square face is quite similar to that of a long face, with the forehead, cheekbones, and jawline being approximately the same width. However, the vertical dimension of the face is narrower, and the facial contours are sharp and well-defined, giving a square appearance. The forehead and lower neck area are relatively full, with a length-to-width ratio greater than or equal to 2:3, see Figure 9-5.

Facial characteristics: make a person appear resolute, strong, and straightforward, and gives a sense of determination but lacks femininity’s charm and gentle qualities.

Figure 9-5 Square Face
Figure 9-5 Square Face

(1) Matching Earrings with Square Faces

Square faces have prominent angles and insufficient length, so accessories that visually elongate the face and soften its angles should be paired.

Vertical chain-style earrings can help increase the length of the face. Elongated earrings with curves and a sense of flow can elongate the face shape and soften the facial angles, such as long oval shapes, long teardrop shapes, and S-shaped designs.

Matching taboos: Geometric stud earrings that increase the face’s width are unsuitable for square faces. Horizontally expanding shapes of earrings will also make a square face appear wider and shorter visually (such as fan shapes). Purely round earrings or those composed of pure round shapes will make a square face look even square. In contrast, geometric earrings with sharp angles like square, diamond, or triangular shapes will accentuate the lines and angles of a square face.

(2) Matching Neck Accessories with Square Faces

The visual effect of a square face is square and short, making it suitable to wear long necklaces. Pendants should be chosen in elongated shapes such as oval, teardrop, or S-shape, as these can elongate the face while softening the facial lines of a square face. A straight, U-shaped necklace that is shorter than the collarbone is not suitable; necklaces with square, triangular, or diamond-shaped pendants will repeat the facial outline and are also not suitable; large round or petal-shaped pendants with curved necklaces that contrast with the facial outline are also not suitable.

6. Diamond-Shaped Face and Matching

A diamond-shaped face can also be referred to as a diamond face, characterized by a narrower forehead, a receding hairline, wide and prominent cheekbones, a jawline that is basically without angles, a longer neck, and a pointed chin, resulting in an overall sharp and three-dimensional facial contour, as shown in Figure 9-6.

Facial characteristics: This type of face shape appears unique, rational, strong, and intelligent, but has a strong sense of distance, lacking warmth, cuteness, and friendliness, leaning towards a masculine appearance, giving off a feeling of coldness, aloofness, and difficulty in getting along.

Figure 9-6 Diamond-Shaped Face
Figure 9-6 Diamond-Shaped Face

(1) Matching Earrings with Diamond-Shaped Faces

Small stud earrings can be chosen, and long drop earrings that reach below the jawline and straight-line tassel earrings with slightly flared ends can also enhance the fashion sense of a diamond-shaped face.

For the narrow forehead of a diamond-shaped face, hair accessories with a curved appearance can be worn, or the hairstyle can be modified (for example, by adding volume at the roots) for enhancement.

Matching taboos: Round, square, and other horizontal-shaped earrings will increase the width of the cheekbones of a diamond-shaped face. Chain-style linear earrings will elongate a diamond-shaped face, while triangular, diamond, and heart-shaped earrings, due to their overly sharp lower edges, will instead highlight the pointed chin of a diamond-shaped face. Therefore, these styles are not suitable for wearing.

(2) Matching Neck Accessories with Diamond-Shaped Faces

A diamond-shaped face is suitable for wearing straight, U-shaped, or beaded necklaces that can soften the angular lines of the face. Pendants can be chosen in round, horizontal round, or straight shapes. Curved necklaces can make the chin contour appear rounder and fuller. A diamond-shaped face is unsuitable for wearing V-shaped, single-chain U-shaped necklaces or pendants with sharp lower edges (such as inverted triangles, hearts, etc.).

Section II Jewelry, Clothing, and Body Shape Matching

1. Jewelry Matching and Body Types

There are certain techniques for matching jewelry for people with different body types. By wearing the right jewelry, one can balance and coordinate one’s figure, highlighting strengths while downplaying weaknesses and concealing areas of concern.

(1) Tall and Large Body Type

Individuals with a tall and large body type have a relatively large frame, commonly found among people from northern regions. Their characteristics include a strong physique, tall stature, broad shoulders, and normal body proportions. It is important to choose accessories that resonate with the nature of their body type.

Cercei: You can choose metal earrings with a heavy feel or lightweight but oversized earrings. It is not advisable to wear smaller stud earrings.

Coliere: You can choose long, thick-lined necklaces that complement your figure; U-shaped and V-shaped designs are suitable.

Brățări: You can choose heavy-textured bracelets made of wood or metal or chain-style stacked bracelets; it is not advisable to choose overly thin bracelets.

Inele: You can choose a ring of moderate thickness, simple, and elegant; it is not suitable to choose a ring that is too thick or too thin.

(2) Petite Body Type

Individuals with a petite body type have small frames, mostly found among people from the south. Their characteristics include small stature, delicate necks, arms, fingers, and normal body proportions. When matching jewelry, it is important to resonate with one’s image.

Cercei: You can choose earrings that are finely crafted and delicate; it is not suitable to choose exaggerated styles such as large round or large fan-shaped earrings.

Coliere: You can choose necklaces with finer lines, delicate pendants, or simple long chains. It is not suitable to choose necklaces that stack around the neck.

Inele: You can choose finely crafted rings with a simple and elegant design and a moderate or finer width of the ring shank.

(3) Fat Body Type

Individuals with a fat body type are mostly short and stout, with a bulky figure, short neck, thick arms, and short fingers. Therefore, when wearing jewelry, it is important to reduce the visual points on both sides of the body, creating a “slimming” effect through visual compression.

Cercei: You can choose simple linear earrings, such as chain-style drops or tassels, but avoid round or square earrings that expand horizontally.

Coliere: You may choose not to wear a necklace or a V-shaped thin necklace slightly longer than the collarbone. Avoid wearing beaded necklaces, straight necklaces, and complex U-shaped necklaces.

Brățări: You can wear simple bangle-style bracelets, like those with a mirror finish or linear or vertically streamlined patterns. Avoid wearing small single-chain bracelets.

Inele: You can wear rings with narrow shanks, but avoid rings with overly large settings.

(4) Slim Body Type

The characteristics of a slim body type include a long neck, slender arms, and fingers, with insufficient body width and no obvious waist-hip line. Therefore, when matching jewelry, one can choose more eye-catching accessories to draw attention outward to the sides of the body.

Cercei: One can choose earrings with expansive shapes such as large circles, squares, or fan shapes. Wearing stud or chain-style earrings with a vertical effect is not advisable.

Coliere: One can wear a slightly thicker straight chain necklace and choose simple pendant shapes like circles or horizontal ovals. Wearing chokers or necklaces with complex pendant designs is not advisable, as this may draw too much attention to the slender neck.

Brățări: A wristband worn with a width of 2~3 fingers or a chain bracelet of the same area; you should not wear a single chain or overly thin bracelet.

Inele: A ring with a standard width of the ring shank can be worn, and the decoration of the ring can be complex and varied, but overly thin rings should be avoided.

2. Jewelry Matching and Clothing Style

Combining jewelry with profession, time, occasion, and other aspects complements daily life. To achieve harmony among people, jewelry, clothing, and the occasion, one needs to consider the overall style of the outfit.
2.1 Jewelry Matching for Professional Attire

Professional attire can be divided into two types based on the occasion: fashionable workplace and serious workplace.

(1) Fashionable Workplace

Fashion workplaces like ordinary companies and fashion media organizations are relatively comfortable environments with no strict dress code. The work in these places has a relaxed and casual atmosphere, so elegant and fashionable clothing styles can be chosen.

Since professional settings are places to demonstrate work capabilities and personal value, choosing jewelry made of valuable metals and diamond materials, such as necklaces and earrings, during the matching process is necessary. The jewelry style should be simple, traditional, and generous, and one can opt for colored jewelry with lower saturation. This matching can give a professional and intellectual overall impression while maintaining fashion, as shown in Figure 9-7. When matching, one can choose to wear three types of jewelry simultaneously: earrings, necklaces, and bracelets or rings.

Figure 9-7 Example of workplace accessory coordination
Figure 9-7 Example of workplace accessory coordination

(2) Serious Workplace

A serious workplace refers to relatively formal enterprises or positions like government, financial institutions, and conference settings. These places are quite conventional. High-deck clothing is generally worn without jewelry; a scarf is used instead to reflect professionalism and authority. The overall look should be simple and capable. If jewelry is needed to enhance the professional feel, then, the style of clothing worn must coordinate with the jewelry being worn. Clothing can be chosen in serious single tones such as black, gray, silver, and blue. The overall fabric should be exquisite, the cut should fit well, and the style should be simple and elegant, giving an impression of capability, stability, and authority, as shown in Figure 9-8.

When coordinating jewelry, one should choose accessories made of pure metal or a combination of metal and gemstones. The style and color of the jewelry must be simple and singular, with color options including silver, black, brown, and light gold. It is not advisable to wear colorful or overly bright jewelry. The number of jewelry pieces worn should not exceed three, and generally, bracelets should not be worn; a watch can be used instead.

Key points for matching professional attire jewelry: the volume should not be too large, the colors should not be too bright or vivid, the color saturation should not be too high, the material should not be rough, the shapes should not be exaggerated, and it should not be overly trendy.

2.2 Matching Jewelry for Casual Wear

People’s dressing styles are diverse during casual leisure time, including dating, shopping, sports leisure, and gatherings with friends. Depending on different occasions and moods, various clothing styles can be matched, generally divided into three types: romantic, casual, and fashionable. In informal settings, jewelry’s materials, colors, and shapes vary widely, allowing for different matching effects.

(1) Romantic Style

Romantic-style clothing can reflect a woman’s charm and femininity. One can choose jewelry with unique shapes and strong curves from metal, gemstones, pearls, gold, silver, and synthetic materials. Shapes include water droplets, stacked designs, flowers, and other curvy forms. The colors should be bright, vibrant, glossy, and highly saturated. Jewelry sizes can be mixed and matched; for example, a simple outfit can be paired with multiple large, medium, and small necklaces, while a simple necklace can complement exaggerated earrings.

(2) Casual Style

Casual-style clothing can give a relaxed and pleasant feeling, helping to ease the mind and relieve stress. Therefore, when matching jewelry, one should choose natural, pastoral-style accessories from wood, amber, stone, and synthetic materials. This natural texture can provide a sense of warmth and simplicity. It is suitable for pairing silver, white, teal, black, light blue, ivory, light red, and light yellow jewelry with lower saturation. The shapes of the jewelry should be moderately sized, not too delicate or exaggerated, the style should not have too many sharp angles, focusing on a simple, loose, relaxed, and natural shape, such as necklaces made of natural wood, Tibetan silver earrings, stone jewelry, etc. (see Figure 9-9 ).

Figure 9-9 Example of Casual Style Accessories Matching
Figure 9-9 Example of Casual Style Accessories Matching

(3) Fashion Style

The jewelry matching for fashion style outfits is diverse; one can choose exaggerated shapes and sizes of jewelry as embellishments or select accessories that are similar in style to the main outfit, such as pairing gender-neutral black and white fashion outfits with Gothic jewelry or ethnic clothing with ethnic-style jewelry.

When matching jewelry, it is important to note that there should not be more than two main accessories; for example, there can only be one focal point in each group of earrings and necklaces or rings and bracelets, such as exaggerated earrings with bracelets, necklaces with rings, or necklaces with bracelets. Exaggerated earrings can draw the visual focus to the facial features and hairstyle, suitable for women with delicate features, graceful necklines, and unique hairstyles; brightly colored bracelets or bangles can help balance the visual center, suitable for women with long arms and graceful figures. This exaggerated jewelry pairing can shift the visual focus to the body’s midsection, highlighting a woman’s figure. Exaggerated necklaces are suitable for outfits with more muted colors. They are unsuitable for pairing with brightly colored or intricately patterned clothing (as shown in Figure 9-10 Marni Fall/Winter 2009 collection). Chain-style necklaces are suitable for women with fuller figures, and necklaces with larger pendants can somewhat enhance the bust. Fashion style outfits can choose multiple jewelry made from metal, wood, stone, jade, pearls, and synthetic materials. The key to these combinations lies in their unique shapes and aesthetic individuality.

Figure 9-10 Example of Fashion Style Accessories Matching
Figure 9-10 Example of Fashion Style Accessories Matching
2.3 Jewelry Matching for Evening Gowns

Evening gowns are a more formal type of clothing, commonly seen in two series: long evening gowns that reach the ankles and short cocktail dresses that reach the knees, primarily in dark or light color schemes. Many evening gowns feature various styles, such as elegant, sexy, cute, and personalized. When matching jewelry, the combinations can vary greatly with the gown style and color changes. Generally speaking, occasions for wearing evening gowns are very formal, so the jewelry matching needs to highlight sophistication, avoid cheap accessories, and focus on valuable jewelry pieces. Necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings can be worn as single items (Figures 9-11), and the combination of accessories should have only one focal piece, not all worn at once. Typically, the focus for high-neck gowns is on bracelets or rings; for off-the-shoulder gowns, it can be earrings, bracelets, or rings; for V-neck gowns, the focus can be on earrings, necklaces, bracelets, or rings; for low-cut gowns, the focus is quite interesting. For women who want to accentuate their bust and express sensuality, the focus can be on earrings and bracelets, possibly foregoing a necklace or opting for a simple chain with pearls or diamonds; for those needing to express individuality, one can choose a tassel-style pendant necklace that reaches the chest. Evening gowns are often in solid colors like black, blue, white, and purple. When selecting jewelry, if the occasion is quite formal, it is recommended to wear accessories that are close in color to the outfit or colorless diamond-like jewelry. In contrast, for a relaxed and cheerful occasion, one can wear accessories that are similar in color or complementary in color.

If the dress style is classic and the material is exquisite, it is also acceptable not to wear any jewelry or to choose more practical imitation jewelry.

Figure 9-11 Example of Jewelry Matching for Evening Gowns
Figure 9-11 Example of Jewelry Matching for Evening Gowns

3. Jewelry Matching with Clothing Colors

From the perspective of the beauty of clothing, the color effect of the entire outfit should be pleasing to the eye and harmonious. The combination of different colored jewelry can play a finishing touch role in the overall clothing effect.

If the colors and patterns of the clothing are too monotonous, it is necessary to pair them with bright and vivid jewelry for embellishment, such as pairing a black outfit with a bright necklace. If the colors and patterns of the clothing are too flashy, it is necessary to choose jewelry in soft and elegant colors for decoration. When selecting jewelry colors, one can choose similar colors that are close to the clothing color, contrasting colors that are complementary, and vibrant multicolored combinations.

(1) Monochrome Clothing

For monochrome clothing, the best matching method is to use contrasting colors. For example, the fabric’s color can highlight the necklace’s decorative effect. For instance, a black outfit paired with a white or bright-colored necklace, a white outfit with a dark-colored necklace, or a blue outfit with a yellow necklace. This matching method allows the clothing and the necklace to gain attention, complementing each other and serving as the main focus.

If multicolored jewelry is paired with monochrome clothing, people will be drawn to the eye-catching jewelry, overshadowing the clothing. Such brightly colored and strikingly shaped jewelry will make the jewelry the main focus, while the clothing becomes a mere backdrop.

The matching of similar colors has also become quite popular in recent years. Still, choosing accessories or nearby color jewelry with a saturation level opposite the clothing color is important. For example, a deep green color paired with a one-shoulder dress complemented by a long emerald green or light blue necklace.

(2) Two-Color or Three-Color Clothing

For simple clothing patterns made up of two or three colors, if you want to achieve overall color harmony, you should choose jewelry in similar colors; if you want to highlight individuality and characteristics, you can opt for contrasting colors or multicolored jewelry combinations. For example, a white top paired with a blue skirt can be complemented with a blue necklace to echo the outfit’s colors, while a light yellow necklace can highlight the design of the jewelry.

(3) Clothing with Complex Colors and Patterns

This type of clothing requires the selection of jewelry in soft colors. Overall, the clothing with prominent colors and patterns becomes the main focus, and the jewelry serves only as an auxiliary decoration, so it should not be too eye-catching. You can choose jewelry in white, silver, light pink, light green, and other colors with lower saturation, and it is not suitable to wear jewelry with complicated designs and bright colors.

When choosing different jewelry colors for matching, it is important to clarify the purpose of the match, prioritize accordingly, and select the appropriate jewelry to wear. By using jewelry as embellishment and accentuation, the aesthetic appeal of the clothing can be enhanced, making the overall outfit more exquisite.

Section III Jewelry Color Matching

1. The Emotional Impact of Colors on People's Psychology

The colors of jewelry have a strong appeal. To fully utilize their potential in matching, one must thoroughly understand the characteristics of colors and apply their properties and emotions appropriately. Color is not just a requirement for decorative forms, but also has an emotional impact, causing different physiological and psychological reactions in people and influencing their behavior.
1.1 Colors and Their Meanings
The meanings of colors and their representations are shown in Table 9-1.

1.2 The Effects and Influences of Colors on Human Psychology and Physiology

(1) The Warmth and Coolness of Colors

Colors that evoke a sense of warmth are called warm colors, which include red, orange, yellow, and yellow-green. Warm colors can express liveliness and positivity; when combined with jewelry, they create a warm and gentle feeling. Colors that evoke a sense of cold are called cool colors, which include indigo, purple, blue, and green. Cool colors can express calmness, tranquility, and a sense of detachment. Jewelry in cool tones gives a feeling of quietness, stability, and groundedness, making it suitable to pair with more understated clothing.

(2) The Lightness and Heaviness of Colors

The perception of lightness and heaviness is a visual psychological experience that depends on the brightness of the color. Light colors with high brightness feel light, while dark colors with low brightness feel heavy. At the same brightness level, cool colors generally feel lighter than warm colors. Applying lightness and heaviness in jewelry design is significant for balancing and stabilizing the human form; it can make heavy shapes and clothing appear lighter while making delicate shapes and flowing clothing appear more substantial.

(3) The Softness and Hardness of Colors

The color of jewelry can also convey a sense of softness or hardness. Bright colors feel soft, while dark colors feel hard. This sense of softness and hardness greatly influences the expression of a person’s character and style. Jewelry with hard tones gives a feeling of coldness and rigidity, emphasizing men’s masculinity and improving women’s perceived weakness; jewelry with soft tones gives a feeling of warmth and gentleness, highlighting women’s femininity and altering men’s harsh and sharp characteristics.

(4) The Sense of Distance in Colors

Different colors can create a psychological effect of expansion and contraction, and different jewelry colors can make the wearer feel either inflated or diminished. The sense of distance in jewelry colors can improve the body’s shape; overweight individuals should choose dark, cool-colored jewelry to create a sense of retreat, while slender individuals should wear bright, warm-colored jewelry to create a sense of prominence and expansion, making them more eye-catching.

(5) The Splendor of Colors and the Sense of Simplicity

The splendor of colors and the sense of simplicity are primarily the result of the brightness and purity of colors. Generally, bright and vivid colors convey a cheerful and splendid feeling; dark and murky colors evoke melancholy and unease; deep and gray colors give a sense of simplicity and plainness. This effect of jewelry can be used to express the wearer’s emotions and style, thereby influencing the feelings of others.

2. Color Matching in Accessories

To create a good piece of jewelry, in addition to shape and appropriate material design, color matching is also very important, as it directly affects the style and atmosphere of the entire piece.

(1) Monochromatic Color Matching

Monochromatic color matching is one of the simplest and most basic color-matching methods. Monochromatic colors refer to a series of hues that are the same or similar, combined with variations in brightness to create different shades, such as dark green and light green, deep red and light red. Monochromatic color matching appears soft and elegant, achieving a dignified, calm, and stable effect. In Figures 9-12, different shades of pink are matched, creating a unified and harmonious color scheme without losing depth.

(2) Analogous Color Matching

Analogous colors refer to several colors adjacent to the color wheel (with an angle < 90°), such as red paired with orange or purple, giving a softer and more unified feeling. Compared to monochromatic colors, analogous colors are more varied. Jewelry composed of analogous colors has a high degree of similarity between the colors, yet the subtle differences create a gentle and delicate effect. In Figure 9-13, the combination of blue and yellow-green creates a rich and splendid visual effect, evoking a sense of joy and liveliness.

(3) Contrast Color Matching

Complementary colors refer to two colors 120°~180° located apart on the color wheel. They are harmonious and distinctly contrasting, creating a vibrant and lively effect when used in jewelry. The strong contrast can leave a stunning impression. In Figure 9-14, the contrast between purple and green makes the colors more prominent, eye-catching, lively, and beautiful.

(4) Complementary Color Matching

The color directly opposite ( 180° diagonal) to any color on the color wheel is called “complementary color.” For example, red and green, blue and orange, and yellow and purple are complementary colors. They are characterized by high contrast, emphasizing and highlighting, creating a striking contrast between colors that can be refreshing. Still, they are difficult to manage and unsuitable for large areas of equal contrast. In jewelry design, combining complementary colors makes each color stand out more. For instance, in Figure 9-15, the combination of red agate beads and green turquoise creates a strong contrast with a noticeable color effect, suitable for some classical ethnic shapes and modern exaggerated designs.

(5) Metal Color Matching

The design and production of jewelry usually rely on the connection and decoration of metal accessories. Common metal colors include silver, gold, antique bronze, and nickel. Different metal colors have their distinct style characteristics; for example, silver is exquisite and delicate, suitable for expressing a fashionable and minimalist style, as seen in Figure 9-16; gold is luxurious and magnificent, typically used in high-end and elegant jewelry, as shown in Figure 9-17; antique bronze and nickel are relatively understated, suitable for pairing with casual, artistic, and classical nostalgic styles, as illustrated in Figure 9-18. Once the style of a piece of jewelry is determined, a single metal color should be chosen to complete it, rather than mixing multiple colors to avoid a cluttered appearance.
